On June 29, 1947 the first Gottscheer Volksfest was held in Franklin Square, the largest Gottscheer festivity ever to be held. No one realized then
that "the Picnic" would become a meeting place for Gottscheers from all over the world. More than half a century later, this
festival did indeed become a significant part of our heritage and tradition.
Through the large-scale efforts of all co-workers and clubs, whether at the Admission Booths, the Ochsenbraten
(roast beef), Wurst, Coffee, Sweater, or Variety Stand, the Cake Stand with its many home-baked "Pobollitzen," or the Book
Stand, this "Fest" is always very successful and is always a memorable experience for all attendees. Acquaintances from the
old and new homeland sit together and talk under the shade of the trees. After years of separation, old neighbors happily
reach out their hands as they are reunited, their joy reflected in their faces. A part of the old Homeland continues to live
on in the crowd of thousands that attend each year.
Each year, we crown a "MISS GOTTSCHEE." She reigns for one year and appears at various festivities.
All the young ladies who have worn the crown to date have experienced a beautiful and memorable year.
