Description: Non-profit Men’s Choir, dedicated to fostering
choral singing and preserving the cultural values of the Gottscheer heritage.
History: The Gottscheer Männerchor was founded on April 1, 1900 in
Brooklyn,
New York, by young European immigrants, who came to the United States in search of a better way of life.
It was the first Gottscheer organization in the Eastern United States, dedicated to
serving the needs of the Gottscheer immigrants in their new neighborhoods, loyalty to the country and faithfulness to the
Gottscheer heritage.
For over a century
since its founding, the choir has met many challenges and has had many notable achievements, and its present members are fully
committed to continue the old tradition.
Since 1964, the
Männerchor and the Deutsch Gottscheer Gesangverein (Ladies Choir), are jointly programming their choral activities as “Gottscheer Chöre”. Two record albums and a songbook have been published. A European
tour was arranged with performances along the way in Germany and Austria and a visit to the old Gottscheer homeland.
Here, in the USA and Canada,
the choirs participate regularly at the Gottscheer Treffen and in programs with other local organizations. Performances in churches in the neighborhood and out of state, the traditional Spring and Fall Concerts,
Christmas and various holiday presentations usually amount to over eight public performances in a season.
